Focus on this instead of the goal

Uncategorized Dec 15, 2022

Hey my friend,

First, what’s the biggest goal that you have?

The one that you are NOT on track to. The one that you keep “trying” to achieve, but missing the target? The one that would be very meaningful for you to accomplish.

Maybe it’s…
- Losing weight
- Having more energy
- Building an audience for a new business
- Leaving a job that is no longer aligned which attracting one that is (including starting the business you've always dreamed of)
- Transforming your relationship into a level 10
- Attracting your dream partnership
- Or...?

Whatever it is, may I first ask, how long have you been working toward this goal unsuccessfully?

I ask that question because if your approach is not working, sometimes people get stuck in their ways and are afraid to change.

But, if you are doing the same thing over and over and not achieving the goal, then something must change!

I know that makes sense. But I know how stubborn your mind may be in holding on to the same strategies & approaches (even when they are not working). It's the mind's desire to keep things predictable and the same.

So here’s my suggestion for you if you can relate (this also works if you are starting on a new venture or goal)...

Focus on committing to the PROCESS instead of the goal itself.

Here’s a pretty simple example. But as always, don’t get lost in my example. Instead, bring to mind what it is that you are wanting to transform in your life…

I’ll admit that by the end of 2020 I wasn’t in that great of a headspace. I was in a relationship that just wasn’t aligned, and I was burnt out on running a fitness company.

When I finally made the decision to end both my relationship, and close my fitness company, I felt a massive sense of freedom because it instantly lifted a heaviness of indecision and misalignment from my heart & mind.

Before making that decision, I had gained about 30 lbs and even had to go up a t-shirt size.

I didn’t feel good. I didn’t feel good about it. And it was more confirmation when a doc told me that I was borderline high blood pressure.

It was time to make some renewed commitments. I had to reset some things like my nutrition, my meditation practice, spending more time with friends, and my own personal fitness commitment.

For the purpose of this message, I’ll focus just on the fitness commitment…

Now, if you’ve ever been off track with your fitness, you know how dang hard it is to get back on track. It’s hard AF!

That’s why less than 10% of people actually achieve their fitness goals.

It’s a habit change.

And, it’s a tough one because it can feel so dang demoralizing to attempt a set of burpees (or any other exercise for that matter) and not have the stamina to do so.

Further, I had moved from San Diego (warm weather) to Denver and unlike San Diego, there are 4 seasons. Why does that matter? Because I workout outside, not inside in a gym.

Pretty solid built in excuse, isn't it? "But it's cold outside, I'll just skip today"

But I was motivated and ready to reinvent my health, and fitness was a big part of that for me.

After dragging myself out to the blacktop for the first workout, I had a big wake up call. 100 times around a jump rope was super difficult. I used to be the jump rope master, and now I can barely do 100?

Demoralizing.

I was tired, my stamina was way down and I wanted to quit.

But I didn’t quit.

It's now been over 18 months and I'm on fire, haven't skipped a beat!

So how'd I do it?

It wasn’t motivating for me to focus on “working out.”

With winter just starting it was getting cold outside and I had a long road ahead of me to be back in peak condition, not to mention the shorter term goal of making it through a winter of outdoor workouts.

So, I focused on the PROCESS- That was, commit to working out 3x/ week.

No matter what. And no matter how I performed.

Just. Show. Up. 3x/ week.

And that's what I did.

I stopped caring about how hard the workouts were, or how far “off” I was from my peak.

I gave myself permission to be in the condition I was in, rather than beating myself up or feeling bad about it.

I just focused on the process.

And I did it all of the way through the winter. Snow storms, even a blizzard, it didn’t fucking matter. I made a commitment to myself and I just committed to the process.

I knew that if I did that, I’d eventually be back in phenomenal shape.

And, I knew that that was also the key to rebuilding my confidence and “feeling good” about my progress.

You see, it was just as important to BE MY WORD as it was to getting back in great shape.

And so, that’s what I’ve done and it has worked great.

I’m now entering my 3rd WINTER season of outdoor workouts. A few nights ago it was 19 degrees out and snowing heavily, and guess where I was? You nailed it, outside working out in the darkness & coldness of the night.

You see, it’s so easy to be deterred by the discomfort of a workout, or in my case, working out outdoors.

But, I don’t focus on that.

I focus on my commitment to my process.

And because I’ve done that without fail, I’m back in peak condition! The weight I had gained is gone. I'm back to my original t-shirt size. And my blood pressure is back in the green.

Not only that, I love my night time workouts in the cold. It will be down to 9 degrees this week and guess where I'll be? Committed AF!

So, let’s come back to your goal.

How can you apply this strategy to your goal?

Give this a shot my friend.

YES I think you should have a goal.

AND, I know that focusing solely on the goal doesn’t always keep people moving forward.

But, this is a great way to achieve something that is perceivably difficult.

Not only does this work to achieve “the goal” it also is a transferable way of being.

Meaning, when you are COMMITTED to one thing, it does something positive for you mentally + emotionally, which makes it easier to be committed to the other areas that you want to level up in.

Hope that helps my friend.
